CBD: How can it benefit you?

As CBD grows in popularity there is mounting evidence regarding its beneficial effects in treating a range of health issues. Here we look at how it works and some of the issues research has shown it may help with.

How CBD works

All cannabinoids produce effects in the body by interacting with cannabinoid receptors. There are two main types of receptors:

  • CB1 receptors are present throughout the body, particularly in the brain. They coordinate movement, pain, emotion, mood, thinking, appetite, memories, and other functions.
  • CB2 receptors are more common in the immune system. They affect inflammation and pain.

THC attaches to CB1 receptors but CBD stimulates the receptors so that the body produces its own cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids.

Some of the issues CBD may help with

Society has found a number of positive uses for CBD, including the following symptoms and issues:

  • Chronic pain
  • Arthritis or joint pain
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Sleep disorders such as insomnia
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Nausea
  • Cancer
  • Allergies or asthma
  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Lung conditions
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease

Some of the issues are further detailed below:

Sleep & Anxiety

One of the most popular uses for CBD is the treatment of anxiety and insomnia. A number of scientific studies have shown CBD to be effective in helping people to both fall and stay asleep.

This is because CBD has the ability to act on the brain’s receptors for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate mood and social behavior, like a natural antidepressant.

Pain & Inflammation

CBD consumption has also been proven to be a natural remedy to chronic pain. However, a study from the European Journal of Pain showed that CBD applied on the skin of animals could help lower pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, by preventing the release of compounds that trigger inflammation in the body.

Other studies have shown that applying CBD to the skin as an ointment significantly reduced inflammatory skin disease and scarring.

Neurological issues

The most scientific research is focussed on the area of epilepsy and syndromes such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which aren’t treatable with conventional epilepsy medication. In a number of scientific studies, CBD was able to reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures, and in particular cases stopped them completely. As a result the first CBD based government approved medicine was produced in the United States.

It is also believed that CBD might help to slow the onset and progress of Alzheimer’s disease. Indeed, one study showed that CBD might help people retain the ability to recognize familiar faces. People with Alzheimer’s can lose this ability.

Fighting cancer

Scientific studies have also found evidence that CBD may help prevent the spread of some types of cancer, as it suppresses the growth of cancer cells, and promotes their destruction. As a result, some researchers are advocating for CBD to be added to chemotherapy drugs to improve the immune system’s response to cancer treatment.

Quitting smoking

A number of studies have also found that CBD has a positive effect on helping people to stop smoking. Smokers who used inhalers containing CBD smoked fewer cigarettes than usual and stopped craving nicotine, whilst another study found that CBD helped reduce cravings during withdrawal from tobacco because of its relaxing effect.

Skin Disorders

Acne is caused partly by inflamed and overworked sebaceous glands in the body. One study showed that CBD helps to lower the production of sebum that leads to acne, partly because of its anti-inflammatory effect.

Furthermore, applying CBD topically may reduce inflammation in psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases. As a result, CBD is becoming a more common ingredient in skin creams and ointments.

In summary, there is a strong and rapidly growing body of evidence for the efficacy of CBD for a number of health issues, of which we have named but a few. If you would like advice on the best CBD products to help you feel great please visit our site to find out the best product for you at
